“Winners are people with definite purpose in life.” Denis Waitley
I love to read. I’ve always enjoyed reading. I remember one summer my little sister Rose and I had a small contest as to who can read the most books. She won. But I read the better books. I have always enjoyed books that could stimulate my mind, books that were not your typical everyday stuff. That summer introduced me to the likes of Plato, Socrates, Confucius, Descartes, Aristotle, Hegel, Kant, Locke, Nietzsche, Satre and Voltaire. One of the best summers ever. I was 14.
So the best way to start this entry is to think back one of my favorite thinkers of all time, Mr. Descartes, and I know many of you have heard of this quote before “I think, therefore, I am”. So on that note, I begin this entry with this question…So what is the purpose to anything in life?
When I asked my mother she said, ‘know, love and serve God”. Sounds simple doesn’t it. Well, I am sure it is not that simple, simply because in order to delve into these things you must uncover the different layers.
I am at the point in my life where my focus is at an all time high. I mean, I didn’t just wake up one day and had everything clicking. It’s just that over the past few years I have grown mentally and that has allowed me to deal with a lot of things. As my friends would tell you, I have been through a lot and I know for a fact that many dudes would have caved in by now. But I haven’t reached my full potential yet so I won’t leave this game of life alone just yet. God has always had a plan and he has always come through for me. So the belief that he won’t let me down has always kept me focus on the bigger prize.
The purpose of life is very confused these days. Money has taken top priority in everyday American life. What many of us have failed to realize is that success is not defined by financial status. There’s a lot more that goes into it. But like many other things in life, this question is personal and it changes from one individual to another. My purpose in life isn’t and will never be the person I am dating or the people I hang out with, etc. I think most people who ask someone else about the “purpose” of something, are either looking to share an opinion they already have about what that purpose is, or they could be trying to discover how they might fit with, or find an answer to, a situation that has confused or hurt them, or both. I think many, if not most folks, who face such uncertainty or pain hope there are “answers” that might resolve their dilemma. Unfortunately, such answers are rarely found from others but can only be found from what makes sense to the individual.
One thing we must always keep in mind though, everything has a purpose. Every person, place, thing, idea and emotion has a purpose. The purpose of asking “What’s the purpose to anything in life” is to question whether or not everything has a purpose in life. We all know a hammer has a purpose, but can we apply the same two-plus-two logic to everything?
What is your purpose? So as you continue your journey through life, I hope you can take some time to ask yourself that question. It surely will help you with your thought process. And when you do find it, please take the time to build on that so it reflects who you are, your beliefs etc. I know I am at a much better place right now because I took the necessary “break” away from certain things and/or people so I could delve deeper into myself and get away from what was holding me back from seeing the light. I am at peace now. I thank the Almighty God for showing me my true purpose.
